“Nelson tried to sell me this mare here, right before he got sick. I remember him telling me she’s green broke, which was why I didn’t buy her. She’s got great confirmation though. She’ll make pretty babies. You should keep her for that. I have a friend who breeds quality racing stock. We can get her bred with the best. See what happens,” Adam said and pet the side of the mare's neck.
“Problem with that is, it’s next year before I get a return on my investment. Maybe even the year after that,” Isaac said almost to himself. The bruises on his face had mostly disappeared, just a shadow of the one underneath his eye that had turned green in the last couple days.
Adam knew he had a puzzled look on his face. “It’ll be worth it.”
“And too late,” Isaac said under his breath.
Adam looked at Tanner, who nodded, indicating he had heard Isaac. “What’s the problem, Isaac?” Tanner asked.
“Nothing, really. Just trying to figure things out. Might be best if I just go back home. Let the bank take the farm.”
Adam felt panic rise up in his throat at the thought of Isaac leaving. Tanner took his hand and held it, squeezing gently to reassure him. It helped a little, just knowing they would be fine, even if Isaac left town. There would always be a hole in his heart, though, and that still scared him a little.
“You should at least try to keep her,” Adam said.
Isaac looked at Adam and Tanner’s joined hands and had a look on his face that Adam had a hard time deciphering. Could Isaac want intimacy after all? If that’s what he was seeing, then they had a good chance with Isaac.
Tanner let go of Adam’s hand and they made their way to the next stall. “I’d sell this one. You’ll get a decent price. She looks pretty good.”
Adam eyed Isaac’s hand as it gripped the rail and he placed his over the top of it. Isaac sucked in a breath, as if surprised, but didn’t pull away.
He could feel Tanner behind them, half on Adam and half on Isaac, as he leaned in to take a look inside the stall. His body weight pressed gently against them both. “She is pretty.”
Isaac looked over at them both and Adam winked at him.
He moved away, forcing Tanner back. “Um...I, uh, have five more horses just like her. Way more than I need.” Isaac said as he practically raced out of the barn.
“I know someone who might be interested. I’ll give him a call for you. If he’s not, then I’ll help you take them to the auction.”
“I don’t need help,” Isaac said quickly. His words came out so fast it was as if he said them just because he was used to saying it, not because he actually meant it.
Adam narrowed his eyes. “Well, that’s just too bad, Isaac. Because I’m helping you whether you need it or not. Might as well get used to it.
